    The Team...

    The Business Development Division is the key contributor to the Port's commercial growth by increasing cargo volume in all market segments and generating incremental revenue by extensively canvassing all possible opportunities. The Business Development Division is a close knit-team that functions in a dynamic, fast-paced environment and routinely collaborates with every other Divisions in the Port, and a broad range of state, local, and federal partner agencies.

    This is an unclassified (Non-Civil Service) position. Non-career positions typically average 20 hours per week, up to 29 hours a week, for a total of 1600 hours in a year for a maximum of two years.

    EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

    The Role...

    Under the dynamic leadership of the Manager of Business Development, the Administrative Intern will play a vital role in driving the success of the Division through a diverse range of high-impact administrative and strategic responsibilities. This internship offers an exciting opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a fast-pased, professional environment. Key duties will include crafting compelling reports and presentations that influence decision-making, coordinating and managing projects from conception to completion, and performing data analysis to uncover insights and trends. This role is perfect for a motivated self-starter eager to contribute meaningfully while developing valuable skills in business operations and development.

    How you get to contribute:
    • Assist in market research for various Business Development projects by gathering and compiling data.
    • Prepare draft reports and memos during project planning.
    • Assist with projects by submitting documentation, acquiring approvals, preparing project schedules and coordinating work.
    • Maintain project files; ensure all records are updated as necessary.
    • Attend and participate in Division and project-related meetings; handle action items as assigned.
    • Attend Business Development-related sponsored events.
    • Help to maintain positive relationship with internal Port employees, contractors and consultants.
    • Help to maintain professional industry contacts.
    • Interact closely with Commercial Services Bureau.
    • Other duties as assigned.


    REQUIREMENTS TO FILE

    Mininum Qualifications:
    • Must be at least 18 years of age.
    • Must be currently enrolled in a Bachelor's degree program at a college or university with status as a junior or senior. Recent graduates (within the last 12 months at the time of application) are encouraged to apply.
    • A major in Economics, International Business or closely related field is preferred.
    • Coursework in supply chain management, data analysis & forecasting is desired.
    To REALLY catch our attention:
    You must be able to demonstrate the following professional attributes and strengths:
    • Detail-oriented is a must.
    • Excellent writing, proofreading, and editing skills.
    • Knowledge of local regional, state, and federal economic development and trade policies is desirable.
    • A strong working knowledge of MS Office (Outlook, Excel, and PowerPoint) is highly desirable.
    • A general understanding of TEU (Twenty-Foot Equivalent Unit) containers and capacity is a plus.
    • Knowledge of maritime or government terminology is a plus.

    SPECIAL NOTE This is an unclassified, "at-will" position. The appointed candidate will serve at the discretion of the Port of Long Beach and can be terminated at any time. In such an event, the candidate has no right to any appeal or grievance procedure under any rule or regulation of the City of Long Beach.
    The non-career Intern position typically works 20 hours per week and cannot exceed an average of 29 hours per week throughout the year, up to a total of 1600 hours in a year for a maximum of two years. Flexibility is offered within typical business hours. The assignment may end at any time, but under no circumstances will it extend beyond two years.
