DEFINITION: Participates in on-the-job training by performing specialized duties related to the intake, establishment, and enforcement of court orders for the collection of child support obligations.
CLASSIFICATION STANDARDS: Positions allocable to this entry-level class are assigned to the Child Support Services Department, receive instruction and practical experience under close supervision, and typically report to a Supervising Child Support Officer. Incumbents obtain information from various sources, use case management systems, initiate and process case documents, and respond to inquiries from the public while developing an increasing knowledge of child support programs, systems and applicable Federal, State, and local laws and regulations. Positions in this class are distinguished from the journey
-level classification of Child Support Officer II by the performance of assignments of limited scope and complexity where technical review of work is made on a frequent basis. Incumbents in this class are required to serve a one-year probationary period.
Essential Job FunctionsDevelops proficiency using manual and automated systems and the application of various laws, regulations, policies, and procedures related to all aspects of case management.
Locates case participants by using automated systems to establish and enforce child support obligations.
Interviews case participants in person and/or by telephone, and requests information through correspondence, to obtain needed information.
Takes sworn statements from case participants as required.
Schedules paternity tests as necessary.
Prepares necessary forms and documents for the establishment and enforcement of child support obligations using automated systems.
Responds to inquiries, provides case status information, and interprets child support policies and procedures.
Consults with attorneys, caseworkers, and probation or law enforcement officers on legal or procedural matters.
As needed will testify in court as to statements made by parties or witnesses during interviews.
Requirements REQUIREMENTS TO QUALIFY: OPTION I: Two years of clerical experience assisting Child Support Specialists* (Former Title: Child Support Officer) in the Child Support Services Department.
OPTION II: Three years of office clerical experience in one or more of the following areas: 1) interviewing the public in connection with applications for employment, insurance, public assistance or similar services; 2) collections work; or, 3) responsible, high-volume public contact which involves problem-resolution and/or the exchange of technical or sensitive information and the use of an automated system.
OPTION III **Completion of 60 semester units or 90 quarter units in an accredited college, nine (9) semester units or 13.5 quarter units of which must have been in the social sciences, such as sociology, psychology, anthropology, history, or political science.
LICENSE: A valid California Class "C" Driver License or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation when needed to carry out job-related essential functions.
PHYSICAL CLASS: Physical Class II - Light: This class includes administrative and clerical positions requiring light physical effort that may include occasional light lifting to a 10-pound limit and some bending, stooping, or squatting. Considerable ambulation may be involved.
VETERAN'S CREDIT: Veterans may be eligible for veteran's credit, which is an additional 10% of the total points added to a passing score.

Additional Information EXAMINATION CONTENT: A multiple choice and/or simulation assessment(s), weighted 100%, measuring Reading Comprehension, Achievement, Professional Potential, Responsibility, and Teamwork.
You must meet the requirements and achieve a passing score of 70% or higher in order to be placed on the eligible list.
EXAM REVIEW: MULTIPLE-CHOICE AND/OR SIMULATION ASSESSMENT(S) ARE NOT REVIEWABLE BY CANDIDATES PER CIVIL SERVICE RULE 7.19. If you have taken identical components recently for other exams, your responses may be automatically transferred to this examination. This exam contains test components that might be used for future exams, and your responses could be transferred to that exam.
After completing and scoring your assessment, our office will review your application to ensure you meet the requirements outlined in the job posting.
