Position InformationThis recruitment is promotional only. You must presently be a full or part-time regular or probationary County of Sonoma, Community Development Commission, Sonoma County Fairgrounds, or Sonoma County Water Agency employee in order to apply for this position.
The Sonoma Public Infrastructure (SPI) Department has requested a
department promotional certification to fill a Maintenance Worker III position.
Only qualified permanent and/or probationary SPI employees on the eligible list may be eligible for referral to the department for the advertised position . This employment list may also be used to fill future full-time or part-time positions as they occur during the active status of the list.
As a Maintenance Worker III, you will complete a variety of skilled public works road construction and maintenance projects that require the operation and maintenance of heavy equipment, light machines, and power tools such as motor graders, backhoes, bulldozers, loaders, large self-propelled rollers, diesel trucks, street sweepers, compactors, low-boy semi-trailers, excavators, and similar heavy equipment. They are also responsible for:
- Interpreting grade stakes in order to make cuts, fills, slopes, banks, and stations
- Assisting Maintenance Supervisors in marking out job sites using grade stakes
- Completing daily time, work orders/requests, and material logs with the timekeeping program (currently UKG) and Lucity software or similar programs
- Training Maintenance Worker Is and IIs in the safe operation of handheld tools, power tools, and equipment
- Backing up the supervisor, as needed
- Gathering materials and tools for the day's work
- Assigning crew to their tasks for the job
- Conducting daily tailgate meetings
The ideal candidate for this position is a self-starter with empathy, tact, and patience, and will possess many of the following:
- Training in the safe and correct operation and maintenance of heavy equipment, and a commitment to ensuring their team is working safely
- Knowledge of the road system and assessment guide, and the ability to take corrective actions to address road hazards and document work according to guidelines
- A strong work ethic, sound judgment, and a common-sense approach to resolving challenges
- Experience in effectively using computer software, including Microsoft Outlook, Lucity, and UKG or other similar programs
- Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate effectively with others
- Various training certifications such as confined space, forklift, trench safety, etc.
Note: A valid Commercial Driver’s License (Class A CDL) with a minimum of a Tanker Endorsement is required for this position.Working Conditions: Duties require sitting, standing, walking on level, sloped, and slippery surfaces at various heights, reaching, kneeling, bending, stooping, crawling, squatting, crouching, and grasping. Conditions also require the need to lift, carry, and push equipment, materials, and supplies weighing up to 100 pounds. Incumbents are required to be available for after-hours emergency response; work in close proximity to moving traffic; and work in all weather conditions, including rain, cold, heat, fumes, dust, and other air contaminants that may cause eye and skin irritation. The nature of the work also requires incumbents to climb ladders, operate personnel lifts, and work in confined spaces; handle noise-producing tools and equipment; and drive a motorized vehicle. Under the Federal Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations, incumbents will be subject to random drug testing if they operate vehicles and/or equipment that require DOT testing.

Experience and Education: Three years of experience in public works or road construction and maintenance work, at least one year of which included training in the safe and correct operation and maintenance of heavy equipment.
Special Qualification: Incumbents assigned to operate the crane must possess a valid Crane Operator Certification pursuant to the California Code of Regulations, Title 8, Section 5006.1.
License: Possession of a valid driver's license at the appropriate level including necessary special endorsements, as required by the State of California, may be required depending upon assignment to perform the essential job functions of the position.
Knowledge, Skills, and AbilitiesConsiderable knowledge of: methods, materials, occupational hazards and safety procedures and tools used in public works, road construction and maintenance; safe and correct operation and preventive maintenance of heavy and light equipment, machines and power tools.
Ability to: perform a variety of semi-skilled manual maintenance and construction tasks for extended periods and under unfavorable weather conditions; understand and follow oral and written instructions; safely and correctly operate heavy equipment and light motorized machines; work effectively with others; accurately complete report forms; demonstrate physical strength, endurance and mechanical aptitude; read and write English at a level appropriate for successful job performance; perform basic arithmetic calculations.
