    DESCRIPTION

    The Department of Library, Arts and Culture has an immediate opportunity for an unclassified, full-time Community Program Technician I (Volunteer & Literacy Program Aide). This is a grant-funded, at-will position. Under direct supervision of a Senior Librarian, the Volunteer & Literacy Program Aide is responsible for recruiting, training, placing and evaluating volunteer tutors and participants in the literacy program at Main Library, and general volunteers at 12 library locations. The role is located at the Billie Jean King Main Library at 200 W. Broadway, Long Beach, CA 90802.

    EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

    • Organizes and maximizes the effectiveness of the current volunteer program and ensures program operates in accordance with LBPL objectives;
    • Coordinates system-wide recruitment for literacy program and general LBPL volunteers;
    • Supports correspondence for both volunteer and literacy programs;
    • Supports volunteer training, placement, recognition, and evaluation;
    • Facilitates literacy program and volunteer program volunteer/participant schedules;
    • Maintains volunteer and literacy program records ensuring requirements are met and any volunteer issues are addressed and documented appropriately;
    • Manages, maintains, and updates the volunteer program databases providing data and reports on volunteer activities;
    • Tracks literacy and volunteer program participant data to assist with grant data collection;
    • Creates clear, sound, accurate and detailed statistical literacy and volunteer program reports;
    • Coordinates with volunteers to ensure attendance at LBPL events and serves as a liaison between LBPL administration, staff, and volunteers;
    • Assists in system-wide programs in which volunteers are involved;
    • Participates in literacy and volunteer program outreach;
    • Performs other related duties as required.


    REQUIREMENTS TO FILE

    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
    • High School diploma or equivalent (p roof required)* ;

    AND

    • Two (2) years full-time professional experience providing technical support for the delivery of programs, activities, and services in the areas of volunteer management, recruitment coordination, community outreach, social services, and/or public library programs. College education in a related field may be substituted for the required experience on a year-for-year basis;
    • Experience working with culturally and socio-economically diverse individuals;
    • Excellent computer skills with Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, and internet required;
    • Strong public speaking and presentation skills;
    • A valid driver's license or the ability to arrange necessary and timely transportation for field travel.
    • Bilingual English/Spanish is desired.

    SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATES WILL DEMONSTRATE:
    • Ability to ensure the library space is welcoming to all, and patrons are following library rules;
    • Learn, interpret, retain, and communicate complex information;
    • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing;
    • Strong interpersonal and communication skills;
    • Ability to keep up with latest trends and updates in software and applications, as well as learn new technologies;
    • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions and procedures;
    • Ability to maintain accurate records and files;
    • Ability to work effectively with a variety of people by consistently exercising tact, good judgment, and a proactive, problem-solving communication style;
    • Ability to work independently or as part of a team;
    • Ability to operate office equipment, including computers, printers, and copiers; and,
    • Ability to stand, walk, stoop, climb, push/pull/lift up to 40 pounds.
